Toggle ItemAm I eligible to live in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing?The following students will be eligible to live in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing:
- Single, matriculated BYU students.
- BYU evening students.
- BYU Flex GE students.
- BYU English Language Center students.
- BYU Salt Lake Center students.
- BYU–Hawaii students.
- BYU–Idaho students.
- Ensign College students.
No other students at any other institutions are eligible. BYU–Pathway Worldwide students, BYU Independent Study students, and BYU concurrent enrollment students are not eligible. Institute students who are not enrolled in the approved list of programs or institutions above are also not eligible to live in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing.
After their first two semesters at BYU, single, matriculated BYU students are eligible but not required to live in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing. Availability of BYU-Contracted Off-Campus Housing for these students may be limited. -
Toggle ItemWhat do these changes mean for students at BYU–Hawaii, BYU–Idaho, and Ensign College?The changes to BYU’s student housing program apply only to BYU. No changes are being made to student housing policies or programs at BYU–Hawaii, BYU–Idaho, or Ensign College. Students at these CES Institutions are eligible to live in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing but are still subject to their school’s housing policies and requirements.

Toggle ItemWhy is BYU making changes to the BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing program?BYU has been hearing from and listening to its students’ concerns with BYU’s two-mile housing radius. Beginning in fall 2022, students who have completed their first two semesters at BYU will enjoy greater flexibility when choosing where to live. Other considerations include the challenges third-party off-campus landlords face when requiring non-BYU students to abide by the CES Honor Code and BYU’s student housing policies.
BYU students will be required to abide by the CES Honor Code and BYU student housing policies wherever they live. -
Toggle ItemDo I have to live in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing?For their first two semesters as a BYU student, all single, undergraduate students must live (1) in BYU On-Campus Housing, (2) in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing, or (3) with qualifying family members. This applies to all single, undergraduate students, including transfer students, who are matriculated, meaning they have been admitted to a BYU degree-seeking program. Any exception must be approved in writing by the BYU Off-Campus Housing Office. Completion of both spring and summer academic terms qualifies as one semester.
After their first two semesters, BYU students may choose to live with roommates from any other institution. All BYU students are required to follow the CES Honor Code and BYU’s student housing policies regardless of where they choose to live. -
Toggle ItemWhy two semesters?Like many universities, BYU will continue requiring students to live their first two semesters in BYU On-Campus Housing or BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing. Research repeatedly shows that students who initially have this close association with their fellow students have a better and more successful college experience.

Toggle ItemCan I continue to live on-campus after my first two semesters at BYU?Yes. Single, matriculated BYU students may choose to live in BYU On-Campus Housing. Residence Life has discretion to give students in their first two semesters priority for available on-campus housing.

Toggle ItemIf I have 24+ hours of college credit but have not attended BYU before, can I live in Orem?No, unless you live with a qualifying family member who lives in Orem. Single, transfer students and freshmen with 24+ hours of college credit who have not previously attended BYU are required to live (1) in BYU On-Campus Housing, (2) in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing, or (3) with qualifying family members.

Will I be required to live in BYU On-Campus Housing or in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing for fall semester?No. If you have completed two semesters at BYU, you are not required to live on-campus or in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing.
